Topic of the Week:
I have good news.. I tracked down the proper way to include hyperlinks for
AOL users
so I will try to include both links for each site in the "Awesome Tip or
Site", "Helpful Sites",
"New Services" and "New Product and/or Software" sections
of the newsletter.
I am NOT
going to include them in the Newsletter Listings in the newsletter or the
web page.
You can either go directly to the web page listings, or the web page version
of the current
newsletter to click on the links. I am only human!! (Ok Nerd, but that's a
true sub-genus isn't it?) 8')
Also, not to be nasty, but PC Accelerator magazine died this week! I think
when they started adding
the "sex" and "babes" to their reviews and content they
lost every female
subscriber they had!
Actually ,the comments were pretty adolescent, but wading through all the
"pin-ups" became tiresome.
Maybe they underestimated the number of us women gamers??? Hmmmm. 8')

Silliness: No jokes this week 8'(
Awesome Tip or Site!
1. MS Outlook:
If where you work you must keep track of your long distance telephone calls,
and then bill the client for the cost of the call. The Phone Call
feature of Outlook's Journal is a good way to keep track of the time spent
on the telephone. To track your calls in the Journal:
1) Go the Contacts folder and double-click the contact that you are going to
call.
2) On the Actions menu, click New Journal Entry for Contact.
3) When you begin the call, click the Start Timer button. While you're
talking,
you can record notes from your call in the space provided below.
4) When you're done, click Pause Timer and save your entry.
Now, when you need to submit your calls to accounting, you can just print
out
the list of phone calls from your Journal or copy and paste the list of
calls into an Office document.

2. Get your site rated (G, PG, etc.)
The following services rate materials published by others. As a web site author, you cannot control what ratings these services will assign to you. You may, however, want to contact them to ask them to rate your site or document. Their labels are not normally embedded within the documents, but rather are distributed via label bureaus.
CyberPatrol's CyberNOT list (labels generated by human reviewers)
EvaluWeb (labels generated by computer analysis of document contents)
NetShepherd (labels generated by human reviewers)
ORC (Objective Ratings Criteria: Hybrid between third-party and self-rating; generates PICS labels based on authors' informal text labels in documents)
SurfWatch (available for demonstration purposes only)
The following services permit you to rate your own site according to criteria they specify.
Italian self-rating service (site in Italian)
If
you use one of those services, you'll connect to its web server and describe
your document or web site by filling out an on-line questionnaire. After
completing the questionnaire, the service gives you a text label in a special
format, which you then paste into the header portion of your HTML document (or
the home page for your site) (note: This is where a lot of search engines look.
be sure to place the HTML
code, usually pre-formatted as a meta tag, into the HEADER of your page, not
they BODY!)
3. Checking your Windows 98 System Files for Problems
The Windows 98 System File Checker scans all the system files searching for
any that may have been modified or corrupted by a recently installed
program. Learn how to use it
New Services:

Did You Know???
What to do if you get spammed? Report the A@#!!
I got this message from a company I subscribe to when
someone lifted a bunch of our e-mail address from the server:
First go to http://www.spamcop.net
about one-third of the way down on the page, you will see
in blue "I understand and agree". Click that link.
Type your email address and click the Verify button.
You will receive a confirmation email from SPAM Cop with
your own private URL to report SPAM. Click the link in
that email, then book mark it for future use.
How to report:
Take the email you want to report and, if you're using
Outlook Express 5.0, right click and choose Properties.
(Make sure you go back to the email from the spammer
--not this one!)
Click the Details tab. With your mouse, highlight all of
the info and use Ctrl-C (holding down the Ctrl button and
clicking once on the C key) to copy it. Then cancel out
of there.
If you are using a lower version of Outlook Express, click
once on the email to highlight it, click on File, then
Properties, then follow the rest of the directions in the
above paragraph.
Now click the "Forward" button as if you were going to
forward that email to someone. Then put your cursor in
the
message portion of the email, above the
---Original Message---
line and paste what you just copied (Ctrl-V).
You should now see all of the header info above the email.
Then use Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-C to highlight and copy the
entire thing, including the headers you just pasted.
Go to your SPAM Cop reporting site (see above). When you
get to the page, there will be a space for you to paste
(Ctrl-V) the message. Do this, then hit the Process SPAM
button.
You will be asked to confirm. If any boxes are left
unchecked, check them.
If you are using AOL, don't worry about the header info.
Block and copy the entire email and follow the directions
two paragraphs up. If you are using Netscape, if the
email headers don't automatically show, there is a similar
procedure to get them, but I'm not sure what that is.
If you get lost at any particular step, just back up and
start over from where you got lost. If you can't find the
email headers, just copy and paste the email--that's
better than nothing! :)
In our business, there is a time when SPAM can be useful.
But there are also times when it is destructive and needs
to be stopped. This is one of those times. Please don't
let him get away with this--with enough SPAM Cop reports,
we can shut him down completely.
If the SPAM Cop site is tied up, please try again later.
If you don't want to fool with all this, please at least
forward the email to abuse@bizland.com, abuse@aol.com,
abuse@whynot.net, abuse@mail.com.
