Newsletter web site update:

Thanks to a visitor to the site I became aware that my tables (the nasty little underpinnings of the site) had become out of whack again from updating the data causing the width of the pages to vary wildly and not fit on your screen! So, I have re-done the home page and am working on the rest of the site, trying to restore order. Look for page sizes and tables to be complete before the next issue comes out.

I have also restored the links for all page (see left margin) please put a link to your site there! Be sure to list whether or not you have a newsletter and if you accept ads or ad swaps!

Awesome Tip or Site:

  1. http://www.themeworld.com ok, here are desktop themes that will take you months to go through! Don’t say I didn’t warn you! <a href=/NewzBytes/2000/”/http://www.themeworld.com” > click here </A>
  2. TIP: If you are accessing a cd-rom with pictures on it you can view them as thumbnails without opening a clip art program by using Windows Explorer. Just select the cd in the left column, then click “view” on the toolbar and select thumbnail. That’s it! You now have a thumbnail of each picture in the right pane instead of just a list of the pic names.

New Services:

1.      http://www.mygeek.com Are you tired of searching for the best price? Go here and they have you fill out a request for an item and then people (or companies) who have that item for sale send the info back to MyGeek who forwards it to you. All your personal info is kept private. FREE

3.      http://www.netflix.com/default.asp?sid=7 DVD rental service. $19.95/month, but unlimited rentals. They send you the DVDs (up to 4 at a time) and include postage paid return envelopes. Watch, mail, watch more! <a href=/NewzBytes/2000/_quot_http:/www_netflix.com"> Click Here</A>

4.      http://www.zapper.com/ This is a service and a program. It does “context” searches in a web site or a file. (it works online, so you must log-on first). The way it works, in general, is like this… say you’re at a website and they have an article about cotton. You want to find out more, but is it cotton growing, cotton clothing, cotton balls??? Highlight the text around the search keyword (in this case “cotton”) and click to find other websites that are about cotton in the same context you were reading about, be it cotton balls, cotton plantations, or whatever. Also translates a phrase from engàspan and will look up definitions (to those tech terms! ;) and has a thesaurus. Other people (or yourself) can create your own zaplets (not the same as the E-mail zaplets in a previous issue) to add download or search sites to the Zapper database. Updateable and expandable. Requires browser versions 4.0 or higher. Keep up with new releases and add-ins here: http://www.zapper.com/coming_soon/coming_soon_fr.html  FREE  <a href=/NewzBytes/2000/_quot_http:/www_zapper.com"> Click Here</A>

New Product/Software:

I was looking for a free screensaver creation program (A friend of mine sent me some great Australian pictures from his vacation—thanks!) on ZDNet and I found these other useful utilities and programs, all FREE!:

  1. http://www.zdnet.com/enterprise/special/obongo/intro.html : This is the ZDNet Obongo bar. Fills out registration forms (like Gator) but also does price comparisons for shopping and search capabilities, and stores user names and passwords. I am trying it out, and I will also add a comment in a week or so about my experience with this program. FREE
    <a href=/NewzBytes/2000/_quot_http://www_zdnet_com/enterprise/special/obongo/intro.html">__ Click Here</A>
  2. http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=00119N : Third Voice is a free program that enhances your browsing by adding highlights to web pages for further browsing, “It makes its presence known as a system tray icon, a new toolbar in Internet Explorer, and a window that docks to the side of IE. Each time you load a new Web page, ThirdVoice quickly scans it and underlines words or phrases that have Websites associated with them and creates active links. Results are shown in the ThirdVoice docked window. The program also lets you express opinions through inline notes on any Web page and read messages posted by other ThirdVoice users. In addition, you may create an open group for others to join, send a private note to have a confidential discussion, and access a built-in search function. Once the program is installed, you'll need to sign up for your free ThirdVoice account.” FREE

  3. http://messenger.msn.com/ : Microsoft Instant Messenger 3 has been released and is available for free at the location listed. FREE <a href=/NewzBytes/2000/_quot_http:/messenger_msn.com">__ Click Here</A>
