Newzie Notes:
============
Well, that transition was pretty painless- so far anyway. :) Thank you
for taking the extra time to re-sign up.
Reader Alerts:
==============
It has been a bit hectic here, having had 2 viruses sent to me because of
customer support emails that I sent in, I guess their address books "or
databases" got zapped and decided to spread the joy. In case you get
either of these- don't open them (but you guys know that already, right?). The
first was a Snow White and the Seven Dwarves picture and the second was a Jimi
Hendrix mp3, both were attachments to supposed responses to my inquiry and both
had a hidden extension after the common appearing last three letters. For
example the Jimi Hendrix was labeled J**H**.mp3.*** with the last three letters
(I substituted * for a lot of the letters so I didn't set off your virus scan
software) the extension of a dos executable file. If I hadn't had my "view
all common file extensions" option on I wouldn't have seen the last three
letters and might have thought it really was an mp3. Well, besides the fact
that there was no reason for them to send me music, of course! So that this
doesn't happen to you do this:
1.
Click on Start->Windows Explorer (If you are
running WinMe it is an extra step: Start->Accessories->Windows Explorer)
2.
Click on Tools (on menu bar)
3.
Click on Folder Options
4.
Click on Views
5.
Under the first heading select the "show file
names for common extensions"
Now you are all set and the "fake" period in that file name won't
fool you! Now if these companies would just train their employees to not open
any suspicious email before scanning it they wouldn't be sending me these
files!
This
is the reply I got when I notified one of the companies, "thank
you, we have already taken care of this problem." That's it- no apology,
no nothing! And it was a particularly nasty one too, it would have trashed
Outlook and my boot sector if I hadn't deleted it--I looked up which one it
was… hmmph!

Newsletter Name: Building Links
Topic: The never-ending quest for high quality reciprocal links.

Author: Eric Ward
Author's Site URL: http://www.netpost.com/

Bio: http://clickz.com/article/cz.3579.html#bio
"In 1994, Eric Ward founded the web's
first service for announcing web sites to online editors, writers, and site
reviewers, and he still offers those services today. His client list is a who's
who of online brands and has included the original linking campaign for
Amazon.com books, wine.com/virtual vineyards, Onsale.com, the Link Exchange,
Microsoft, Rodney Dangerfield, Kellogg’s, the AMA, the BBC, and The Weather
Channel…" (see the link above for the rest.)
The Building Links newsletter is published twice a month on the clickz.com site
and can also be subscribed to for delivery in your inbox. Some of the recent

A
Link Too Far: Understanding Link Depth Origination :: 11.23.2000
What Your Link Request
Should Contain and Why :: 11.09.2000
I
have read several of the newsletters (articles) and find them very helpful.
There is a lot of content in each issue, which is fresh and original, not just
a pitch for the services he offers at his website. Mr. Ward gives step-by-step
instructions on how to implement his suggestions for increasing your links on
the web and making sure they are quality links, not just to FFA pages or
classified ad mills. The article posted 3-29-01 titled "How to Build a
Free and Fast Link Alert Service" is a good example. In this article he
describes how to use a reminder service to keep track of changes made to sites
that have your links on them. This way, you can check to make sure your link is
still intact, and that the site is adding fresh content- hopefully not by
removing your link. Which reminds me, a tip he gave in the 3-15-01 issue is
very true-- don't forget to go back and make sure your link is still there for
as long as your link to them is alive! If you don't you could be advertising
for someone who didn't keep his or her word and advertise for you-- do you
really want to do that? If you follow his advice, you will surely improve the
quality of your links (reciprocal or other wise) and in turn gain new eyeballs
for your site.

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article explains the set up switches for WinMe,

not Win95. Very helpful if you want to watch exactly what is being installed
instead of the progress bar (setup /p g=3Â
there is a space after the word setup and between the p and the g). This
would be helpful if something went wrong. Advanced .

1. Well, it's official. SpotOn is SpotOff. Here is the
latest info and links to get your bookmarks transferred over.
"Customers Using SpotOn Bookmarks:
We recommend that you export your bookmarks to your own computer in either
Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator format. You can do this using the
Tools-Export Bookmarks_ menu. You can also visit http://support.spoton.com for
instructions.
In addition you can also transfer your SpotOn account and bookmarks to Blink, a
leading bookmark management service.Â
Please click this link: http://www.spoton.com/includes/blink_upload.html
to initiate this transfer.
If you experience any difficulties moving your bookmarks to Blink we recommend
first exporting them to Internet Explorer then using Blinks Import Bookmarks
option. Please note that Blink does provide an optional Explorer panel that can
be installed in your browser to access your bookmarks. This can be downloaded
from their tools menu. For more information what Blink has to offer, visit
their Website at http://www.blink.com.
Customers Using SpotOn WebTours:
We regret that WebTours may not be functional online after March 29, 2001, but
you can save an offline (or snapshot_) version that will run on your local
computer."
2. Well, just when one goes away
another arrives. Go here
"http://one.digital.cnet.com/
Microsoft just released a test version of Internet Explorer 6, the world's most
popular browser, and we've got it! We'll tell you what's new, whether you
should download this beta, and why this version might drive the last nail into
Netscape's coffin" - Cnet, to read
about the new Internet Explorer 6.0 Beta that came out this week. You might
also want to check it out at ZDNet and read some of the downloaders' reviews.
They seem to vary wildly, either you love it, can't live without the new helper
windows, or it crashes your computer, eats up Outlook Express, won't uninstall
and generally ruins you weekend.

FOOT-AND-MOUTH BELIEVED TO BE FIRST VIRUS UNABLE TO SPREAD
THROUGH MICROSOFT OUTLOOK
Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control
and Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center today confirmed that foot-and-mouth
disease cannot be spread by Microsoft's Outlook email application, believed to
be the first time the program has ever failed to propagate a major virus.
"Frankly, we've never heard of a virus that couldn't spread through
Microsoft Outlook, so our findings were, to say the least, unexpected,"
said Clive Sarnow, director of the CDC's infectious disease unit....
Executives at Microsoft, meanwhile, were equally skeptical, insisting that
Outlook's patented Virus Transfer Protocol (VTP) has proven virtually pervious
to any virus. The company, however, will issue a free VTP patch if it turns out
the application is not vulnerable to foot-and-mouth.

lots more in the original item, which comes from the folks at SatireWire: http://satirewire.com/news/0103/outlook.shtml

Awesome Tip:

Just a small tip this week. On PCs that
were originally formatted by ME, a fresh "Format C:" from a non-ME
boot disk is the ONLY reliable way either to go to (or back to if you tried ME
and didn't like it) Win98 or to Win2K. That's because the WinME format command
is a weird mutation that only works properly for WinME itself. Other OSes may
choke if you try to install them on a WinME-formatted disk!
